In Self-Carriage

Coaching - Courses - Community - Fitness

Developing riders in the pursuit of self-carriage.

Until I started a consistent equestrian specific mind-body strength training program, I had no idea how imbalanced and gripped my seat was.

Since I started training, I have become more balanced, stable and mobile in my seat.

This journey is a pursuit of achieving body awareness, focus and skill acquisition.

We are about helping riders to move better with their horses.

About Rider Biomechanics Courses

Courses look at how riders move in the walk, trot and canter. Riders gain insights into when to ask for transitions, feeling phases of gaits, and linking how their bodies are moving during these moments.

The pelvic floor course sets riders up to use their pelvic floor well in the saddle, and add a dynamic pelvic floor training program to your workout plan.

The contact is a comprehensive course that takes a deep look at what contact is and how to truly feel and adapt to the horses mouth in a symmetrical and confident way.

A good contact requires a rider to be coordinated, symmetrical, supple, feeling and confident. Lets uncover the mystery of the contact and actively train coordination, feel and shoulder mobility to give clarity to your hand signals to your horse.

The Why?

Why you train is personal.

Consider thinking of yourself as an athlete that is in training for the "Life Olympics".

Being an equestrian requires the body to be able to adapt to, and deal with incredible amounts of force.

My WHY, is to move the best that I can with my horses, for as long as I can. This is part of my lifestyle, that includes all the elements required for healthy aging.

Consider adding these elements to your training program:

  • Dynamic strength training against resistance.
  • Coordination training
  • Balance challenges
  • Endurance
  • Agility
  • Proprioception - Train your feel
  • Knowledge of your body - gain confidence in moving

Each of these elements is at the heart of In Self-Carriage Fitness Community. From the Foundation Seat to the Independent Seat.

Student Centered-Coaching

Student-centered coaching encourages riders to cultivate confidence in their capabilities to attain equestrian objectives. The skills acquired through embodied anatomy sessions, both in unmounted and mounted contexts, empower riders to accurately perceive when adjustments to their posture are necessary.

About Coaching Sessions.

Whether we meet in person or online. The first session begins with an unmounted quick class about anatomy. We begin by looking at your anatomical area of choice, to get an idea of function. Then we embody the movement. This session gives me insight into how to best help you in the saddle. We are able to be on the same page, making communication so much easier.

Session will either be with the horse here at Eckwood Equestrian or by video analysis. Riding sessions are an hour. For video send in a 30 minute clip of you riding, I will analyze it, then we meet online to discuss biomechanical solutions.

Riding sessions are interview style, I ask you how you are feeling throughout the session. This guides me to work on new areas directed by your responses. My job is to get you feeling areas of your position (equitation) then self correct. This creates rapid change, when you are practicing on your own, you can more easily feel and make changes.

Sessions are imagery heavy, we link metaphorical or anatomical images to your movement. This creates a highway from your brain to the ares of your body, you will be able to remember the feeling and re-create it on your own.

Those in the personal coaching program have the option to follow along with a mind-body strength training program that supports the work we are doing in the saddle.

The most profound changes happen when we can master movement of our bodies in an unmounted setting. When we have time to process and feel in an unmounted setting it becomes easier to find the feeling in the saddle.

Know Your Why.

Why do you participate in a fitness program?

Gone are the days of punitive training programs that produce feelings of failure, ultimately lead to giving up. Thereby perpetuating the cycle of guilt, inadequacy and self loathing. The "no pain no gain" model. In these models, outcome goals are unclear, why are you doing this training and for how long do you plan on doing it?

Sustainable exercise programs have a clear goal. Research shows that fitness programs need to pleasurable and adopted into your daily lifestyle. It becomes the way you live. Instead of something that you have to do for a certain amount of time.

Know your why.

The More You Know

Getting to know your body and how it moves adds value to your exercise program, equitation, and posture. Courses and The Rider Biomechanics Community explore areas of anatomy, train feel (awareness), improves body image and teaches practical tools to apply to your riding.
